San Antonio Spurs’ Derrick White has fond memories of playing with Pau Gasol

The announcement of Pau Gasol’s retirement this week prompted Spurs goalkeeper Derrick White to reflect on the great Spaniard’s time at San Antonio and a career that included two NBA titles and six seasons as an All-Star.

“Amazing career, obviously, here in the NBA, abroad, international, Hall of Fame career,” White said of Gasol, who retired at 41 after 18 NBA seasons and several years. as a pillar of his country’s national team.

Gasol began his career in Memphis, where he was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2002. But he’s best known for his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, helping this legendary franchise win back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010 alongside Kobe Bryant, who has become a close friend.

Gasol played 2 ½ seasons with Spurs before leaving after a buyout midway through the 2018-19 season.

Gasol paid tribute to all the teams he played for this week with tweets. His nod to Spurs read: “Thank you, Spurs!” and included a heart emoji and a photo of him in action wearing his # 16 swimsuit.

“It was really special for me to spend a few years with him,” White said. “While he was here he really helped me and took care of me. I wish him the best for his retirement and his next step.

Thinking back to that time, White said it was “crazy” to think of all the talented veterans he played with as a rookie with Spurs in 2017-18.

“Pau was there. Tony (Parker), Manu (Ginobili), LA (LaMarcus Aldridge) and Rudy (Gay) also entered, ”White said. “These guys have had many great years. It was great to learn from them. It was really special to be part of this locker room.

a point of emphasis

Considering the youngsters and newcomers on the roster, it’s no surprise that Spurs have made improving their communication on the pitch a priority this preseason.

“Every team is probably going to say communication is a big deal at the start, especially when you have a bunch of new guys or young guys,” he said. “It’s definitely something we need to focus on. This is an important point for us.

White said the lack of communication often manifests itself on the defensive end.

“A lot of times we are one step behind and we’re just chasing or following,” he said. “We’re just working on communication and trying to be more aggressive.”
