Milwaukee Community Bike Event promoting a healthy lifestyle

Some cyclists decided to resist the weather on Saturday June 26. Rain or shine, the Westlawn Gardens community would come together for their annual family bike ride event.

“They’ve been on bike rides for the past few years so I’m really excited to reinvigorate and make it a sustainable thing in the future,” said Michael Anderson of Wisconsin Bike Fed.

Community representatives are happy to bring the annual gathering back this year – continuing their mission of fostering a healthier community.

“I want the community to come together,” said Jackie Burrell, president of the Westlawn Residents’ Council. “There is so much crime here, and I have a goal for the community. I have a goal for the community to get its act together.”

“They need to know that we are here and always positive, and that there is a lot of positive work going on,” said Sally Yeldell, Westlawn Gardens Community Ambassador.

People also handed out 200 healthy breakfasts, so everyone was energized for their three mile trip. And the special guest, Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, came to show his support.

“I just want to congratulate you and thank you all for everything you do to make sure people stay active,” Barnes said. “It’s not just how we build community, it’s how we build families to help these communities last even longer.”
