Fast casual seafood restaurant Captain D reopened on the northwest side of Milwaukee.

Located at 7320 Good Hope Road, the stand-alone restaurant is one of the two captain D locations that originally opened in Milwaukee between early 2018 and late 2019, only to close following the COVID-19 pandemic. The other restaurant was located at 3326 W. Capitol Drive near Century City Business Park.

Both franchises were owned by Valerie Daniels-Carter, president and founder of Milwaukee V&J Holding Cos. is one of the nation’s largest multi-brand franchised restaurant operators.

The location of Good Hope Road – with a 62-seat dining room, drive-thru, take-out and advance order options – reopened under new ownership: Rajiv Lala of Captains of Chicagoland LLC. The restaurant industry veteran owns more than 100 restaurants across the Midwest, with national franchises including Dunkin’, Wingstop and Baskin-Robbins. In addition to her Captain D’s in Milwaukee, Lala will open a second location in Matteson, Illinois later this year.

As he seeks to develop his own multi-brand portfolio, Lala is optimistic not only for the Captain D’s brand, but also for the local market.

“Seafood occupies a unique niche in the restaurant industry, and Captain D’s is the clear leader in the segment,” he said. “…Operating multiple businesses in the Midwest over the past few years, we see immense potential for Captain D’s in Milwaukee and look forward to continued growth throughout the region,”

Captain D’s himself identified Wisconsin and Milwaukee as the key to his greatest expansion into the Midwest. However, it is unclear if the company plans to resume operations at the West Capitol Drive site.

In addition to multiple openings over the past two years in states including Illinois, Michigan and Missouri, Captain D’s is launching its first Express prototype in Whitehall, Ohio later this summer. The The Nashville-based company and its franchisees operate more than 530 restaurants in 23 states.

“We have prioritized investing in our business operations and systems to ensure our franchisees receive top-notch support,” said Brad Reed, Captain D’s Director of Development. “It has rewarded us with a strong system of passionate operators who are dedicated to growing the brand.”
