#5 Penguins take on #4 Raiders in first round of #HLWSOC

The opening kickoff
#5 Youngstown State Women’s Soccer Team (7-7-3, 5-3-2 Horizon League) vs. #4 Wright State Raiders (8-6-3, 5-2-3 Horizon League) in the first round of the 2022 Horizon League Women’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, October 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Alumni Field in Dayton, Ohio.

Last outing
Second year Elis Klein Spindola recorded the 12th hat trick in program history and earned first place in the women’s soccer program’s Horizon League tournament since 2014 as the Penguins beat Robert Morris, 3-1, on Oct. 26 at North Athletic Complex.

If they win, the Penguins will face No. 1 Milwaukee or No. 2 Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 2 or 5 p.m. ET.

Second Log Team, Berry All-Freshman
Youngstown State Senior abriana log was named the All-Horizon League second team and Taylor Berry was named to the Horizon League freshman team after a vote by the league’s head coaches, the Horizon League announced Friday. Login, who leads the Penguins with 36 shots, has two goals and two assists this season for six points. She also scored the winner of the Purdue Fort Wayne game on October 13. She is the first YSU player to earn all-league honors since 2019. Berry has 22 shots and two goals with an assist for five points this season. She scored an equalizer against Oakland on September 15 and sealed a 2–0 victory with a goal against IUPUI on October 22. She is the third YSU player in the past four seasons to be named to the All-Freshman team. . Maddie Angelo was the last player named to the team in 2021.

Appolonia and Evans named All-Horizon Academic League Honorable Mention
Youngstown State graduate student Jordan Evans and junior Justine Apollonia have been named to the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Honorable Mention Academic Team, the league announced Oct. 25. – point average. She’s appeared in 15 games and made eight starts this season and scored her first career goal against Milwaukee on September 25. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll eight times. Appolonia has a 4.0 grade point average in math. She has appeared in all 16 games and has made seven starts this season. She scored her first career goal against Green Bay on October 6 and was named to the Horizon League Honor Roll four times.

First tournament since 2014
With the 3-1 win over Robert Morris on Oct. 26, Youngstown State clinched its first Horizon League tournament berth since 2014. The Penguins have a 1-11 tournament record. Their only victory came in a shootout against Valparaiso on October 29, 2008.

Hat-Trick Tarzi

Elis Klein Spindola became the ninth player in YSU history to record a hat trick with all three of her goals against Robert Morris on October 26. She is the first YSU player since Allison Ludwig in 2010 to score three goals in a game. During the year, Tarzi tied for fifth in the league with five goals, but tied for the league lead in conference with five.

Another Kirkpatrick record
With the victory against Robert Morris, junior goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick set the YSU single-season winning record for a goaltender with seven. She also holds the YSU single-season and career shutout record with seven and nine.

Offensive rise
Over the past seven games, Youngstown State’s offense has been impressive. The Penguins have outscored their opponents, 13-6, and are 5-1-1 in that span.

curtis the giver
Senior Haley Curtis was one of the best in the league for assists. She leads the Penguins and is tied for seventh in the Horizon League with four assists.

The Vigna of Fire
Senior Regan La Vigna scored at least one point in the last three games and four of the last six. She was credited with an assist against Green Bay on October 6, scored a goal against Cleveland State on October 16, won the game against IUPUI on October 22, and had an assist against Robert Morris on October 26 . year, LaVigna has three goals and three assists for nine points.
